  1. PLAY WITH SCALE

When it comes to pattern, size does matter. Combine large, medium, and small-scale patterns in the same space so they complement instead of competing with each other.

2. CONNECT WITH COLOR

Repeat the same color in each pattern to create a sense of cohesion in your space, even if the motifs are significantly different.

  1. VARY PATTERN TYPES

Using all stripes or florals could feel overwhelming. Instead, use varying motifs to add interest to your space.

  2. BALANCE WITH SOLIDS

Incorporating solids can create moments of calm + break up pattern. This can be done via textiles, furnishings, and other decor.

  3. DISTRIBUTE PATTERN EVENLY

Be mindful about using pattern everywhere in your space rather than just one area. This will keep the room from feeling unbalanced.

  4. DON’T OVERTHINK IT!

We love breaking design rules. It brings creative tension to a space. Your home should make you happy + be filled with things you love. You do YOU!

We also totally get that this may be intimidating for some + are here to help. That is precisely why we created our Design Bites Services. If you would like an expert eye to guide you as you navigate pattern mixing, or anything else in your design adventures, drop us a line!
